The Orkneys are made up of around 70 separate islands with the capital Kirkwall located on the largest island known, a little confusingly, as ‘The Mainland’. The shortest crossing point over the Pentland Firth from north east tip of mainland Scotland is only 10 miles yet the Orkneys offer visitors a remote yet welcoming experience on islands steeped in history with a wealth of wildlife and some staggering scenery.
The Ayre Hotel is superbly located overlooking the harbour in Kirkwall, the largest of the Orkney Island towns and the main arrival point on the Orkneys by ferry or by plane from mainland Scotland.
The family-run hotel offers guests a choice of hotel rooms or apartments with great modern amenities. All hotel bedrooms are ensuite and include complimentary Wi-Fi and flat screen TVs. Sea view rooms are available at a supplement. The apartments are located beside the main hotel with either one or two bedrooms, kitchen facilities and access to all of the main hotel amenities.
The Ayre Hotel has its own restaurant serving a hearty menu of favourites for lunch and dinner. They have their own car park and are only a few minutes’ drive from the main ferry terminal.
Being on the seafront and steps from the harbour, the Ayre Hotel is within easy walking distance of the heart of Kirkwall which offers visitors some great local shops, bars and restaurants amongst its narrow traditional streets. St Magnus Cathedral nods to Orkney’s Norse past of which you can learn more about in the town’s charming Orkney Museum.
