Glenapp Castle Overview
Location: Ayrshire, Ballantrae, Scotland
The Glenapp estate was originally owned by the Earl of Orkney before being purchased by the Hunter family in the latter part of the 19th century. They commissioned renowned architect David Bryce to design and build the current castle in a grand Scottish Baronial style. The castle changed hands in 1917 and over the years fell into disrepair before being restored in the 1990’s to become one of Scotland’s finest country house hotels. In 2001, Glenapp Castle became an exclusive Relais & Chateaux member.
Glenapp Castle stands in 36 acres of private grounds which include a Gertrude Jekyll designed Italian garden, a walled garden and a wooded glen. The castle stands on the Ayrshire coast, overlooking the Firth of Clyde and out to Ailsa Craig island.
There are 17 individually designed and lavishly furnished guest rooms and suites at Glenapp, some benefitting from glorious sea views and others with fabulous garden views. There’s also a stunning four-bedroomed Penthouse Apartment spanning over 4000 sq ft boasting a media/games room and a massage/treatment room.
Glenapp Castle has its own award-winning fine dining restaurant and offers lunch and dinner with a focus on locally grown produce, especially from the hotel’s own walled garden. Being right by the coast, Glenapp can make the most of exceptional local seafood.
The hotel offers a wealth of activities on site including tennis, croquet, boules, archery, cycling and Glenapp offers Hebridean Sea Safaris which can take in island tours, distillery visits and some great local seafood restaurants and inns. The Ayrshire coast is packed with interesting things to see and do including world class golf courses, distilleries and historic sites including Dumfries House, Culzean Castle and Lochnaw Castle.
