Harris Hotel Overview
Location: Tarbert, Isle of Harris, Scotland
Family owned and run for over 100 years, the Harris Hotel is situated on the outskirts Tarbert the capital of the Isle Harris, and a short distance from the ferry which runs between Harris and Uig on Skye.
Built in 1865 by the Earl of Dunmore the hotel was originally conceived as a ‘sporting retreat for anglers’. Originally leased from the estate by the Cameron family in 1903, they bought the hotel in 1948 and it’s now run by the 4th generation of the same family.
The Harris Hotel offers a choice of 23 ensuite guest bedrooms, all individual in size and design in keeping with the design of the traditional Victorian building. The rooms offer a range of sea, garden and hill views and all have flat screen TVs and offer complimentary Wi-Fi. The hotel has a small library and a television lounge.
The hotel offers guests a hearty breakfast and lunch is available in the bar or packed lunches can be arranged for a picnic or for those heading out into the hills. Dinner in the evening is served in the hotel restaurant with an accompanying wine list by Corney & Barrow.
The bar is stocked with over 100 malt whiskies and guests can try a number of craft gins including the world-famous Isle of Harris gin with its pretty, distinctive bottle – the distillery is only 100m from the hotel and offers popular distillery tours.
The Isle of Harris and Lewis is renowned for its superb west coast beaches and its stunning landscape dotted with a multitude of lochs and connecting rivers and streams. Visitors can explore the ancient Calanais Standing Stones, a Blackhouse settlement at Arnol, the Bosta Iron Age House or at certain times of year, weather permitting, take a boat trip to St Kilda.
