We arrived in the evening so the traffic was light and from Ciampinio Airport to our hotel in central Rome it was only about a 35 minutes drive. It was lovely driving through Rome at this time of year and at night, as all the Christmas lights were glistening and it looked so festive, it got us right into the spirit of December!
After a very swift check-in to the lovely 4-star Hotel Morgana we headed out in search of dinner, both of us had a list of must have’s while in Italy and unsurprisingly Pizza was pretty close to the top of the list. A tip I have found very useful on all trips is “go where the locals go” and after a few moments watching them come and go we settled on Ristorante Mensa Di Bacco. Only one street over from the hotel and with Pizza bigger than the plates – we were in pizza heaven! Fed and watered for the night we turned back to our extremely comfortable room for the night.

Breakfast the next morning was the next foodie event, a fantastic selection of Parma ham, local cheese, bacon, hash browns and even chocolate croissants. All served up by extremely friendly staff who kept the coffee supply flowing – perfect for our busy day ahead.
The Spanish Steps, Rome, Italy
After a handful of hotel visits in the morning we jumped on the hop on hop off bus to get a real feel for the city. This is a must do in Rome, as it has plenty of twisty streets and alleyways making it too easy to loose direction but with the bus tour it helps your internal compass. We saw some amazing sights while on the bus such as like Vatican, Colosseum and the Monumento Nazionale and it stops next to the Spanish Steps and the Trevi Fountain. Its great value and well worth it. The Spanish Steps are as impressive as you expect them to be, busy even in December, but we had to stop for a photo or two. Sitting in the centre of the Piazza di Spagna surrounded by shops like Gucci and Prada – there was some serious luxury window shopping to be done here!
The Trevi Fountain, Rome, Italy
We headed to the Trevi Fountain in the evening and we’re so glad we went at this time, beautifully lit up was the best way to see it, the recent renovation work is apparent as the stone is now gleaming. Having seen these sights many times in films over the years we were definitely not disappointed, you really can imagine the hordes of people streaming down the hills into the colosseum to watch the gladiator take each other on, with more time I think the tours around this iconic building would have been great to go on – as we spoke to other guests at the hotel who had actually went it sounded great.
A late flight home the next day and we had already fallen in love with this historic city in such a short space of time. I think we were planning our trips back on the plane! The friendly locals, the delicious food and the smooth wine make Rome a truly magical destination that will take you on a very Italian adventure!
